Helmos: our mountain

A new walking tour of Helmos image

An educational mountain tour will take you on a journey to understand our relationship with the environment, and how research leads to a better understanding of Helmos.

The research station

NCSR Demokritos’ research station gives us a focal point to learn more about climate change, scientist and citizen-led research and actions we can take in our own lives.

Citizen Scientists image

We’re creating a local group of citizen-scientists who will co-design and run a project to measure local air quality with support from Demokritos’ scientists and specialist scientific instruments.

Our team

We are a partnership between DISSCO l Dissemination Science Communication, an organisation specialising in research and creative citizen-led projects,  the National Centre for Scientific Research, Demokritos – the largest multidisciplinary Research Centre of Greece – and Koinos Topos Institute, a NGO architecture practice.

Our vision

There are five key stages of our work to help bring our plans to life and make sure that we create a sustainable activity.

1. IDENTIFY: How Climate Change is connected to social and economic life in Kalavrita.

2. DEFINE: The effects of Climate Change on Helmos and Greece more broadly.

These two stages will create the content for our walking tour.

3. INFORM: Help people learn about the effects of Climate Change and the process for gathering data through the citizen science project and our tours.

4. REFLECT: Through our evaluation processes we will collate what we learned from the process and what needs amending within the activities.

5. SUSTAIN: We will provide the tools and resources, such as scripts for tours, for the local community to continue the activities, if desired.
